I live in Kent and travel to France 4-5 times a year, ferry lines use the same system now as airlines, booking well ahead will give the best prices and travelling at night or early morning helps. In the past year we've used P&O, Norfolk Line and Seafrance, so there's no easy answer as to what is the cheapest. There is also a new player, LD Ferries that started only last month.
