Le Touquet British Week 8th – 16th October 2011 As the Centennial Anniversary of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage in 2012 is almost upon us an event not to be missed is the “The British Week”

This years festival has a strong James Bond slant. As you may know, Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is the city where James Bond was born in the novel entitled ‘Casino Royale’. Ian Fleming had a long association with the town.

It all starts on Saturday the 8th October with horse drawn carriage rides and a Bagpipers parade starting from the Palais des Congrès at 11am. The Highlights of the week are the James Bond festival and the British “OPALIC GAMES. The games cover a large range of sporting activities including golf tournaments, archery, volleyball, badminton, tennis and many more Events carry on into the evening with Karaoke nights, a great Gig by “the Deadwax”, British pop music party and a special 007 clubbing night.

The themed gala night “When the British Spies meet in Paris-Plage” at the Westminster Hotel marks the finale of British week 2011.

Enduro Le Touquet 2012

The dates for the 2012 Enduro (Enduropale) Le Touquet are the 4th and 5th February 2012. About half a million visitors annually attend this crazy motorbike endurance race along with some 1200 participants, of whom around 1000 are on 2 wheels the rest on 200 quads. With so many visitors to this motorbike event Le Touquet becomes a huge party town for the weekend. We have plenty of accommodation if you want to come to the Enduro in Le Touquet but please book early.

Do they mix the sand with cement??? I´ve heard that they use glue, is that true?

Festival of the Giants – Douai

Every year during July the people of Douai take to the streets wielding giant effigies of folk characters forming the annual Gayant festival. The Five main giants are carried around the streets with music to the delight of the crowds. The tallest, Monsieur Gayant, is 8.5 m high and weighs 370 kg. Madame Gayant is 6.25 m tall and weighs 250 kg. Their three children Jacquot, Fillon and Binbin, are respectively 3 m, 2.8 m and 2.2 m. The parents take 6 men to carry them around, the children only require 3 people. The family Gayant are accompanied by the towns other ‘géants’ forming part of France’s biggest ‘giant festival’ that includes about 100 massive effigies of characters from local legends

The festival originated in 1530 the children did not appear until 1720. Banned by the Church in 1770, the festival started again in 1801. The modern costumes were designed in 1821.
Don’t forget your Gayantines’, sweets at the festival. Named after the giants who appear on the packaging the sweets have a milk-caramel shell and are filled with a soft butter or caramel paste in a vanilla or chicory flavour.

Douai is located near the junction of the A1/E17 and the N455, about 165 km (about 2 hrs) from Le Touquet via the A26.

Boulogne sur Mer Maritime Heritage Meeting

The Côte d’Opale Maritime Heritage Meeting.
11-07-09 to 14-07-09
A celebration of the Sea in Boulogne sur Mer. Every two years a unique and original festival takes place on the promenade in the port of Boulogne sur Mer. The festival features some great events including:-

•   A Gathering of traditional boats
•   Concerts and sea shanties
•   A maritime heritage village
•   Seafood tasting
•   Boat Trips out to sea on board traditional sailing ships
•   Evening entertainment with shows, concerts and dancing.

This maritime festival is organised by the town of Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Federation for Maritime and Culture Heritage. A great event for all the family not to be missed more…

	The Festival for children in Le Touquet runs throughout the summer from the 11th July until the 12th August 2009. Each performance, workshop and sport initiatives is free.

Bike Route Wimereux – Le Touquet

Following the coast and meandering through the streets of Boulogne it really will give you a real flavour of the Pas de Calais area.

Bike Tours Of Le Touquet

	Take a bike tour of Le Touquet on two wheels as part of the tourist office’s Promenades Découverte season. Tours meet every Sunday outside the Palais de l’Europe and cover various themes including maritime history and architecture. Bring your own (hired) bikes to take part. Additional biking tours of Le Touquet also take place on a Wednesday during July and August.

Le Touquet Sand Sculpture Festival

Every year Le Touquet hosts a summer long festival of grand sand sculptures. This years theme features the Kings of France. Approximately 2000 tons of sand was used to build this years sculptures. Surprisingly the sand used is not local, but transported by lorry from a quarry in Belgium. French Kings made from Belgium sand! The festival runs until the 30th August 2009. Entry price is €7.50 concessions available.
