Etaples Cemetery – Visit War Graves Close to Le Touquet

Etaples Military Cemetery

L’Opale Villa provides an excellent base if you wish to visit some of the historic sites of “The Great War”. The Somme is about 45 minutes away, Arras a little more, and Ypres about an hour and a half.  In Montreuil-sur-Mer, 25 minutes drive, there is a famous equestrian statue of Sir Douglas Haig.
ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY Pas de Calais, is the closest site of historic interest being approximately 15 minutes drive from Le Touquet. The largest of its kind in France, it overlooks the Canche Estuary on the Boulogne road as you leave Etaples.

Etaples cemetery, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens famous for the design of numerous country houses in England. The cemetery contains 10,769 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, and some 119 Second World War burials. As a reminder of the huge loss of life on both sides Etaples Military Cemetery also contains 658 German burials.

Notable burials or memorials include:

Private Jim Bonella, Australian Machine Gun Corps
Brigadier Edgar William Cox, DSO, FRGS, General Staff.
Lieutenant Colonel William Robert Aufrere Dawson DSO, Royal West Kent Regiment
Captain Noel Forbes Humphreys, Tank Corps
Major Douglas Reynolds, VC, Royal Field Artillery.

During the First World War, the area around Etaples was the scene of huge concentrations of British soldiers destined for the western front. In 1917, 100,000 troops were camped among the sand dunes. The town became a giant hospital with a number of facilities established by the Australians, New Zealanders and British. Typically up to 22000 men could be treated for their injuries.
Other local historical sites of interest.
La Coupole- A Second World War museum with presentations in English. It is located in St Omer.

Martine Picot offers group and individual Yoga classes adapted to the individual, yoga cikitsa (or yoga therapy), Ayurveda with individual assessment and monitoring,

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on flexibility, strength  and controlled breathing to boost mental  and physical stability. The main components of yoga are postures and breathing.

Yoga originated in India about 5,000 years ago and has been adapted differently in many ways all over the world. Yoga is well established in health clubs, schools, leisure centres,  and hospitals.

Yoga helps balance by strengthening your lower body – particularly your ankles and knees – thereby giving greater stability.

In the Le Touquet Yoga Studio  there is also a massage parlour and a ayurveda workshop. You will experience deep relaxation and moments of peace and healing.
Throughout the seasons, the agenda offers workshops, new treatments or yoga and Ayurveda classes.

I Found The Best Bakery in Le Touquet

French Bread Le Touquet
If you are staying at one of our holiday rentals then you will inevitably want to buy some  bread. On a sunny morning walk nothing  beats the smell of fresh bread wafting in the air. This is one of the delights of breakfast in France.
The French seem to have some magical recipe for making baguettes that is never accomplished in other countries.

The Bakery Fred is my favourite patisserie in the town.  You will remember the baguettes or wands as one of the best you have ever eaten.
The crumbs are airy, the crust crunchy without being too hard, no need to break your teeth on any chewy hard bits.
Sunday morning’s queue of anxious customers speaks volumes for this bakeries popularity.
From the street, you can see the master baker at work and the batches follow to please the long line of regulars and tourists.

The Viennese Pastries are amazing!

Viennese pastries Le Touquet
If you thought there was only one type of baguette think again.  There is a choice of 5 at Fred’s. If you find the Retro wand too small or are feeling hungry then opt for the “go large” Chef’s Baguette which is twice as big as the Retro Baguette.

Types of Baguette
Baguette Rétrodor
Baguette Rétro au sésame
Baguette aux lardons
Baguette viennoise
Baguette du chef – Twice as much fun as the Retro Baguette

A great place for fantastic bread – They even have a loyalty card.

Guyomard Retro and Rock Art Exhibition – Le Touquet

Gérard Guyomard Le Touquet

5th March - 20th May

The art exhibition covers the entire floor of the museum and is a marvellous display of Gérard Guyomard’s free spirit and joyous rebellion.

Thirty paintings from the 1960s are on show. They take you back to the vibrant sounding 60’s when Jimmy Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and the Beatles topped the charts. The scenes depicted of popular life are close to “Departure on vacation” (1968) and “Halles Rock” (1987).
Gérard Guyomard began painting in 1964 and became inspired by images of everyday life and erotic fantasies. His monumental works include 1985 – Mural in Vittuone, Italy and 1986 – Hospital Lariboisière
His vision is that of his personal world projected on a board.

Rallye Automobile – Le Touquet

Rally Car Le Touquet Rally

When: 15th - 17th March

The 2018, 58th Rally of Le Touquet is almost here. Eighty two competitors are already registered for what promises to be an exciting 3 days. The rally is the 1st round of the French championships and is always a great way to start the season. With the addition of the Junior and Renault Clio R3 trophy it should be fantastic.

The roads are characteristic of the Pas de Calais region, dust or mud according to the weather. Drivers experience both narrow and fast roads with some particularly impressive big jumps. The stages are generally short 13 – 15km and some take place on Friday night.
Popular sections of the race for spectators are located at Clenleu , Bourthes, Camiers, or Beussent and of course the beachfront event in Le Touquet. The Rallye Automobile Le Touquet is a popular event with around 100,000 attending over the 3 days depending on the weather.
Its a popular friendly atmosphere so go along and enjoy the race.

Frenchman Éric Brunson last years 4 times winner is a favorite this year.

Generally drugs that are freely available across the counter are the same as can be purchased at a UK Chemist shop.

Le European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles you to receive treatment with the same rights as a French residence. If you have a prescription from the UK or issued in France you should present it together with the EHIC when you go to the pharmacy.

You should pay the same rate at the pharmacy as someone who was insured and living in that country. In France, for residents the Carte Vitale is the health insurance card of the national health care system in France.
