Fishing Boat Le Touquet

Maréis Sea Fishing Discovery Centre – Etaples

Why not come and learn about the history of fishing and the sea. The fascinating Sea Fishing Discovery Centre close  to Le Touquet is great fun for kids and provides an amazing interactive learning experience.
Located in a former fishing nets factory, Maréis’ main mission is to make the everyday life of today’s sailors and the marine environment of the English Channel and North Sea better known.

Etaples-Sea Fishing -Museum

We recommend taking the guided tour (1 hour long) which is full of facts but also entertaining and fun. Most of the guides are ex fishermen and so are very knowledgeable on their subject.  You will discover the world of fishermen which is not an easy one.
After the guided tour, you can continue the visit at your own pace, explore  read and touch.  There are a number of aquariums including the nursery, you are also allowed to touch some fish – which  is amazing, both kids and adults will love it!
I am sure you will enjoy the very pleasant and helpful staff, its well worth a visit not just on a rainy day.
After you have had some food by the river why not go and explore the lovely town of Etaples with its many restaurants and shops.

If visiting Maréis has wetted your appetite to learn more about the sea then why not try  Nausicaa in Boulogne.  France’s  “Centre National de la Mer”  is one of the largest public aquariums in Europe. It is a world-class marine research institute, with the focus on conservation and educating people to help preserve the oceans.

Free Things to Do In Le Touquet

Caudron Museum Rue

There are many Free things to do in Le Touquet and the surrounding area. Attached to the Office de Tourisme in Rue you will find a fascinating museum about two brothers (named Caudron) who were the first Frenchmen to build and fly an aeroplane in 1909. There initial factory was in Rue, and they then established a larger factory and flying school at Le Crotoy not far away on the shores of the Baie de Somme. Their work was a major  major contribution to the first world war early flying machines.

Rue is pretty historical town just 40 minutes drive from Le Touquet and our holiday rental properties. With the impressive Belfry and the aviation museum its well worth a visit. Spend a couple of ours in the  museum and then go and explore the delights of the Somme Bay and its estuary.

Rue-Belfry

Alphonse and René Caudron  built their first aircraft, a large biplane, in August 1908. Initially unable to obtain an engine, they flew it as a glider, towed by a horse and tested it through the summer. In September 1909 they finally flew it under power. By April 1910 they were able to make a return flight of 10 km (6 miles) to Forest-Montiers.

Gaston Caudron died in an aircraft accident on 15 December 1915 at the airfield at Bron. René continued in the aircraft business until the fall of France at the start of World War II. He died in 1959.

Museum Opening Times

Ideal for families, kids will have no problem imagining themselves in one of the early Caudron aeroplanes.
The museum is open all year round, free of charge.

Le Touquet Parking

Car Parking Le Touquet

Le Touquet Parking

Parking in Le Touquet is not normally a problem with a number of options available.
There are large car parks down by the beach that span the entire length of the promenade. Within the town if you want to just stop, pick up or drop there are a few monitored bays close to the main shops. These bays are free for one hour. They have a bollard with a countdown display that starts ticking as soon as you drive up. In theory they phone home to alert the police when the hour is up.

There is plenty of other on street parking within Le Touquet where the price varies depending on which zone you park in. As a general rule in the central area you will pay €2 per hour and in the outer zone the cost is €1. Payment is easy with the ticket machines at sensible intervals accepting Cash or Credit Cards.

Parking Restrictions

Green Zone

In the Green Zone payment is required for weekends, public holidays and the entire months of July and August. Throughout the rest of the year Green Zone parking is Free. Charges are due between 09:00 and 19:00 hours. Lunchtime parking between 12:30 and 14:30 hours is free at anytime.  The maximum you pay is for 8 hours in any day.

In the Red Zone payment is required at all times of the year. Charges are due between 09:00 and 19:00 hours. Lunchtime parking between 12:30 and 14:30 hours is free at anytime.

Parking Fines

Parking fines  approximately equate to the cost of a full days ticket. In my experience the cost doesn’t seem prohibitive however the time and effort required to actually pay any fine is expensive.

Parking Tips

There is free parking directly in front of the Aqualud  during office hours between 09:00 and 14:30 hours.
If you park outside of the Green Zone on street parking is free. Le Touquet centre is relatively small so it is not that far to walk

Cycling Holidays in Le Touquet

Cycling-Le Touquet

Cycling In Le Touquet

Le Touquet is a great place to base yourself for a cycling holiday.  The town boasts over 10km of cycling trails around the town and forest areas.  There is a great choice of routes depending on if you want to go for a few hours or fancy something more challenging.

Rent a bike from one of the many hire shops in town and head towards the airport and riding stables. On route you will experience some great views of the Canche Bay. Riding through the residential part of the town  is very pleasurable, marvel at the beauty of the multi million Euro Art Deco Villas.  Alternatively head out of town along Avenue Francois Godin towards the beach at Stella Plage.  Stella Plage is another small beach resort sharing the same stretch of golden sand with Le Touquet. The advantage is that Stella is always much quieter than Le Touquet. You will find  some small intimate cafes and restaurants with a family feel.

Traffic in Le Touquet is light so even if you are not on a cycle path you should never feel intimidated. There are lots of other cyclist around so generally motorists are more aware of your presence.

Another notable route, recommended at sunset,  runs from the Thalassa  Sea Water Spa Centre along the beach to the yachting centre at La Baie de Canche.  En route there are many worthy stopping points to admire the sunset.
Cycling LeTouquet Sunset

If you are renting one of our villas such as LOpale in Allée de Jonquilles then it is possible to gently cruise all the way to the beach, stress free on a great cycle route. Alternatively if you are staying in the Lakeside development of May Village just filter into the cycle lane passing by the entrance.
